What they all have in common is the fact that they’re caused by an excess of melanin, which is the same mechanism responsible for tanning. Melanin, however, can alter over time and cause changes in skin pigmentation.
Skin spots are classified in different ways, and can be treated with different methods and tools according to their category. Here are some of the most common.
Melasma: consists of a spot on the skin caused by the uneven concentration of melanin. It can depend on sun exposure, but also on the sex hormones produced during pregnancy or with the pill. Lastly, it can be caused by stress.
Keratosis: Keratosis can be caused by two fundamental factors. When they arise after the age of 50, they’re probably caused by age, and appear on the face mainly due to a genetic predisposition. However, keratoses can also be attributed to massive sun exposure. In this case, they appear at any age and always in the form of well-defined lesions. They need professional treatments and checks as they are considered real squamous carcinomas.
Solar and senile lentigos: Typical of elderly people, they appear on the back, hands and more sun-exposed areas. They’re usually benign in nature. If it’s lentigo maligna on the other hand, an examination and surgical spot treatment is necessary.
Laser Pico, Q-witched, Fraxel and Hydrafacial are just some of the technologies available at the SOTHERGA clinic to treat sun spots. Before treatment, it’s important to evaluate the most suitable therapeutic approach together with the doctor, also by examining the state of the skin with Observ technology.
