Forget excessive sweat!

Sweat is necessary to regulate body temperature, hydrate and protect the skin. Sweating is therefore physiological. What represents a disorder is an excessive level of sweat called hyperhidrosis (axillary/palmar).

Hyperhidrosis, which is therefore excessive sweat localized in the armpits, palms and soles of the feet, is caused by:

• temperature variations
• exogenous stimuli
• endogenous stimuli

It’s a disabling disorder from a social point of view as many patients are ashamed and don;t know that it affects a very high number of both men and women. The causes are many: excess weight, thyroid diseases, hormonal dysfunctions and psychological factors.

The remedies for hyperhidrosis are different and range from the administration of antiperspirants to Botox injections which inhibit the transmission of stimuli to the synapses and, consequently, block the functioning of the sweat glands. In very severe cases, surgical techniques are also used.

BOTOX FOR THE TREATMENT OF HYPERHYDROSIS

Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a neurotoxin that is naturally produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This toxin causes a block at the level of the synapses (sweat gland interface and autonomic nervous system), stopping the release of acetylcholine which acts as a neurotransmitter. This therapy, which has no side effects, is injected under the skin by means of many micro-injections spaced about 1.5 cm at the level of the armpit, the palm of the hand or the soles of the feet. The treatment has an average duration of 9-12 months.
