How good are natural ingredients for the skin?

People often favor aloe vera and turmeric for facials, for a clean choice. But our skin is not made of these substances. On the contrary, it is composed of ceramides, collagen and hyaluronic acid

There’s a lot of talk these days about how turmeric, the spice “of life” that is an ayurvedic medicine staple for its antioxidant properties, is a marvel for the skin, not just when used in cooking or taken by mouth through herbal supplements. Its calming and brightening properties would be, according to clean formula aficionados, the natural solution with some topical benefits. Thanks to the bioactive curcumin inside, a highly brightening and antimicrobial ingredient, it promotes healing and drives away free radicals. Even there are experts who see turmeric facial products as an excellent ally for evening out skin tone, while also encouraging collagen production and diminishing acne marks. In short, turmeric would bring out the skin’s natural glow. Also popular is aloe vera, a botanical ingredient that was initially used as a soothing portent to calm sunburns or as a panacea to purify the body if drunk pure, and has now become one of the most widely used ingredients in cream formulations. But from recent studies, it appears that there is limiting scientific evidence and research on aloe vera’s role in skin care. Although it is a source of anti-inflammatory and soothing benefits, precisely because it is a valuable natural antiseptic, it does not guarantee to cure acne with the percentage of salicylic acid in it. At least, not as much as retinoids. Finally, there is coconut oil, which many people use for everything from brushing their teeth to nourishing their hair. All great functions because coconut oil is a natural antiseptic that, in addition to being moisturizing, provides relief to those suffering from acne and eczema, and is rich in polyphenols, which can fight skin aging. However, many dermatologists advise against the topical use of pure oil on facial skin because, being rich in fat, it could have a comedogenic effect (cause of blackheads) especially for those with oily skin.

It is fine to use these natural ingredients, but there’s a catch

Let us always remember that our bodies and skin are not composed of aloe, turmeric or coconut oil. Three very good allies, especially if introduced correctly in the diet, that certainly help to purify the body and see a brighter face. Our skin, on the other hand, is made up of collagen and hyaluronic acid, has enzymes that actively convert all forms of retinoids while ceramides make up 50 percent of the lipids in the skin barrier, and it is precisely these ingredients that it needs to regenerate, hydrate and even look younger, with rejuvenated turgor.

Today people are more prone to use natural ingredients than collagen and hyaluronic acid

The risk of starting a DIY facial care, without having a consultation with a medical expert before, is that the skin may react if prone to allergies. Substances from the earth, like other foods, are certainly more intolerant than those we already have in our bodies. Turmeric, for example, while very tolerable, could irritate and inflame the skin of those who are, unknowingly, intolerant to it. So it is always recommended to try it on the forearm and wait a day or two before spreading it all over the face, just to make sure it does not create redness, swelling or irritation. Plus, being yellow, if used too often it could stain the skin.
