What is collagen?
Collagen is the most important protein in the human body: it accounts for up to 35% of the body’s proteins and makes up 90% of the skin. Collagen is not only found in the skin, but also in: bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, hair and generally everywhere there is connective tissue.
There are several types of collagen. Type 1 and type 3 are related to the dermis, type 4 is related to the dermal-epidermal junction. Collagen type 1 accounts for 90% of collagen in the human body. Type 3 collagen is found in many tissues and provides support to the structure of organs such as the uterus and intestine. And lastly, type 4 collagen is usually found between the dermis and the epidermis.
Collagen in the beauty world
Collagen keeps the skin firm and toned, which is why the skin ages noticeably when it is lacking. Over time, collagen synthesis decreases, the anti-oxidant system slows down and the skin begins to age visibly. This is why collagen is a key beauty trend, increasingly in demand and used in latest-generation injection treatments and special creams often combined with hyaluronic acid.
Radio frequency and collagen
There are several medical treatments that target tissue stimulation through heat, in order to, among other things, produce new collagen and elastin restoring tone and elasticity to the body. At SOTHERGA, we use 4 different types of radio frequency which are carefully selected by our team on the basis of the areas to be treated and the individual needs of the patient.
